Red algae are often attached to stones or other plants. The genus Polysiphonia is easily to recognise with a loupe or with the microscope. A "branch" consists of an axis of Polysiphonia, a common genus of marine red algae, is red in color because of the pigment phycobilin, which masks the green color of the chlorophyll responsible for photosynthesis. As a red-colored plant, Polysiphonia is well suited to absorb the green and blue-green light that typically penetrates the deeper seawater where these red algae thrive.

During the life cycle of Polysiphonia, the three following phases can be distinguished (scheme here above): A. (Orange background) Starting from spores, male and female heterothallic (different thalli) gametophytes develop after germination. On a fertile side-trichoblast spermatangia develop which eventually give rise to spermatia (male gametes).

Range: Scale:the coin used as a scale is 24mm or almost 1” wide. Microscope images of algae are usually blue stained.

Specimens of Polysiphonia sensu lato were collected from the subtidal zone in Jeju Island and transported them to the laboratory using a container with ice. Samples were studied under the microscope (ECLIPS 80i; Nikon, Tokyo, Japan) and were made as voucher specimens. A piece of each thallus was taken off for molecular analysis. Sections Polysiphonia is a genus of filamentous red algae with about 19 species on the coasts of the British Isles and about 200 species worldwide, including Crete in Greece, Antarctica and Greenland.

Thallus Structure of Polysiphonia: The thallus is filamentous, red or purple red in colour. The thallus is multi-axial and all cells are connected by pit connections hence, the name given is Polysiphonia. Due to continuous branching and re-branching the thallus has feathery appearance (Fig. 1A). The thalli may reach the length of about 30 cm.

The genus is represented in India by about 16 species found is southern and western coasts of India.
